Burning Barrels
Burn Barrel Preperation
-Always cover your burn barrel with a 6mm (1/4″) or smaller metal mesh screening.
-Clear away any debris for at least 3m(10′) around your barrel and work up the area to expose the soil, or place barrel on gravel surface.
-Position your burn barrel at least 30m(100′) away from any structure or standing timber
Conducting a Safe Burn
-Never burn in windy conditions. Only burn when you can barely feel a breeze.
-Light the burn barrel in the late evening. Try to avoid burning during the heat of the day.
-Light the burn barrel with paper and match, a “zip” b-b-q lighting briks, or Diesel fuel.Never use Gasoline! there has been a number of burn emergencies in our County caused by using Gasoline to light the burn barrel.
-Never leave the fire in your burn barrel unattended.
-Keep fire fighting tools (shovel, rake, garden hose, fire extinguisher) nearby to help put out spot fires.
What You Can’t Burn
-Preserved wood
-Material from automobile bodies
-Rubber or Plastic
-Unused oil
-Pathological waste
Fire Bans
When conditions are extremely hot and dry a fire ban can be issued. When this occurs do not light your barrel, take it to a land fill until the fire ban is lifted then you can resume burning in the barrel.
